Torgny Bendelin was named head coach of the Swedish U18 national team.

He follows after Jim Brithen after Sweden’s quarter-final ousting at the recent 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship in Switzerland.

Originally Brithen’s contract was extended in March but the outcome of the U18 Worlds changed the plans so that he will work in another function.

“It is difficult to say what influence the results have but it is clear that we are not happy to leave in the quarter-finals,” Henrik Haraldsson, Director of Development in the Swedish Ice Hockey Association, told Expressen. “We evaluate our organization every year after the World Championship. We think it is natural that Torgny (Bendelin) will take the class of 1998 up to the U18.”

Bendelin was coaching the U17 national team in the last two years and knows many of the players who will play for him in the upcoming season with the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship in Grand Forks, USA, as the highlight.

The 58-year-old was the head coach of the U20 national team from 2004 to 2007. He was also coaching AIK Stockholm, Leksands IF, Linkopings HC and HV71 Jonkoping in the top Swedish league.
